Amnesia

When Daniel opened his eyes, he had no idea where he was. The bright lights above him hurt his eyes, and a dull pain spread through his head. A nurse hurried over when she saw him awake.

“Can you tell me your name?” she asked.

Daniel stared at her.

“I… I don’t know.”

A doctor arrived a few minutes later. He explained that Daniel had been in a serious car accident and had been unconscious for three days. Although he had escaped with only minor injuries, he had lost his memory.

“This is called amnesia,” the doctor said. “You may remember everything in a few days, or it could take much longer.”

Daniel nodded, but the words meant little to him. He couldn’t even remember his own face.

The following afternoon, two detectives visited his room.

“I’m Detective Harris, and this is Detective Collins,” the older officer said. “Before your accident, you made an emergency call.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“I did?”

Harris placed a phone on the bedside table and played a recording.

Daniel heard his own frightened voice.

“Someone’s dead… I saw everything… They’re coming… Please hurry!”

The recording ended with the sound of screeching tyres and a violent crash.

Daniel felt a chill run through his body.

“I don’t remember saying that.”

“We know,” Collins replied. “The problem is that when officers arrived, there was no body. Nothing. It was as if the crime had never happened.”

“So maybe I imagined it.”

Harris shook his head.

“You sounded terrified. We think you witnessed something real.”

That night Daniel struggled to sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, strange images flashed through his mind. Rain. Trees. A broken window. Someone shouting.

Then he saw a hand.

The hand was covered in blood.

Daniel sat upright, breathing heavily. The image disappeared before he could see the person’s face.

Over the next week, the detectives visited regularly. They showed him photographs of places near the road where his accident had happened.

One picture made him stop.

“That building,” he whispered.

It was an old warehouse.

“I’ve been there.”

The detectives exchanged a quick glance.

“Are you sure?”

“I don’t know… but it feels familiar.”

Police searched the warehouse the next morning. It had been abandoned for years. Apart from broken furniture and empty boxes, they found nothing.

Daniel was disappointed. Once again, the clues had disappeared.

Then another memory returned.

He remembered hiding behind a stack of wooden crates.

He remembered hearing two men arguing.

One of them had a snake tattoo on his neck.

Before Daniel could remember anything else, the memory faded.

The detectives checked police records. Only one local criminal was known for having a large snake tattoo.

His name was Victor Kane.

But when officers searched Kane’s house, he had already vanished.

Two days later, Daniel noticed something strange.

A man wearing a dark jacket was standing across the street from the hospital.

He wasn’t looking at the entrance.

He was looking directly at Daniel’s window.

When Daniel pointed him out, the man walked away without turning around.

The detectives took the sighting seriously. They moved Daniel to another hospital under a different name and placed officers outside his room.

“If someone is watching you,” Harris explained, “it’s because they’re afraid you’ll remember.”

That night Daniel had his clearest memory yet.

He saw Victor Kane arguing with another man inside the warehouse. Suddenly Kane pushed him. The man fell backwards, hit his head on a metal beam and stopped moving.

Daniel had pulled out his phone and taken a photograph.

Kane had seen the flash.

Then he had shouted, “Get him!”

Daniel remembered running to his car before making the emergency call.

The next morning, police searched Daniel’s damaged phone again.

Hidden inside its memory, forensic experts found the missing photograph.

Although blurry, it clearly showed Victor Kane standing over the victim’s body.

The evidence was enough.

Later that day, police arrested Kane as he tried to leave the country using a false passport.

Months later, Daniel’s memory had improved, but parts of that night were still missing. Some memories, the doctors said, might never return.

That no longer worried him.

He had forgotten many things, but he had remembered the one detail that mattered.

Sometimes, a single memory is enough to uncover the truth.
