The Daredevil

Kevin loved taking risks, and his wife was getting tired of his irresponsible behaviour

Short Story: The Daredevil

American accent

Kevin loved it when people called him fearless. The word made him feel strong and important. When someone said, “Kevin is not afraid of anything,” he would smile proudly.

For Kevin, danger was exciting. It made his heart beat faster and filled him with energy. Normal life felt slow and boring. Kevin always wanted something bigger, faster, and more dangerous.

When he was younger, his friends admired him. Kevin climbed high rocks near the sea. He jumped into deep water from tall cliffs. He rode his motorcycle very fast on quiet country roads.

People often shook their heads and said, “Kevin, you’re crazy.”

Kevin always laughed. “No,” he said. “I’m just brave.”

But at home, nobody thought it was funny.

His wife Anna worried about him all the time. Every time Kevin left the house for another dangerous adventure, she felt afraid. She imagined accidents and hospitals and bad news.

One evening Kevin came home looking very excited.

“You should have seen what I did today!” he said. “I climbed the old stone tower outside town. The stairs inside are broken, so I climbed the outside wall.”

Anna stared at him.

“You climbed the outside of a tower?” she asked.

Kevin smiled. “The view from the top was amazing.”

Anna did not smile.

“Kevin,” she said quietly, “do you ever think about what could happen to you?”

“Nothing happened,” Kevin said.

“That’s not the point,” Anna replied. “You never think about us.
You only think about showing people how brave you are.”

Kevin waved his hand.

“You worry too much,” he said.

Anna looked at him sadly. “One day your bravery will be tested for real.”

Kevin laughed. “I’m ready for that.”

A few weeks later Kevin went hiking in the mountains with his friend Luke.

They walked for hours along a narrow path. The higher they climbed, the steeper the mountain became. The air was cold and the wind was strong.

Finally, they reached a very dangerous place.

It was a thin path along the side of the mountain. On one side there was a tall rock wall. On the other side, there was a huge drop into the valley below.

Luke stopped immediately.

“Kevin… this doesn’t look safe,” he said.

Kevin looked at the path and smiled.

“Perfect,” he said.

Without waiting, he stepped onto the narrow path.

“Kevin!” Luke called. “Be careful!”

Kevin slowly moved forward. The wind pushed against him, and small stones moved under his feet.

Halfway across he turned and shouted, “Take a picture!”

Luke nervously lifted his phone.

At that moment Kevin heard a sharp sound.

Crack.

A stone under his foot broke.

Kevin froze.

His heart began to beat loudly in his chest.

Another stone moved.

Then the ground under him shifted slightly.

Kevin tried to step back, but his foot slipped.

Suddenly he lost his balance.

He dropped to his knees and grabbed the rock wall with both hands.
Small stones rolled down the mountain and disappeared into the deep valley below.

“Kevin!” Luke shouted.

Luke quickly stepped forward and grabbed Kevin’s arm.

“Don’t move!”

Kevin could feel the wind pulling at him. His hands were shaking.
For the first time in many years, he felt real fear.

If he fell, nobody could save him.

Slowly Luke pulled him back onto the safe ground.

Both men sat on the mountain path, breathing hard.

For a long moment Kevin said nothing.

He looked down into the deep valley and imagined falling. Then he thought about Anna. He thought about his children waiting for him at home.

Suddenly, the word ‘fearless’ did not feel good anymore.

Finally, Luke asked him.

“You still think danger is fun?”

Kevin shook his head slowly.

“No,” he said quietly.

For the first time, he understood something important.

Being brave was not about risking your life to impress people.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is walk away.
